Chief investigator Calum Semple said those who were obese, with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 “do particularly badly from viral diseases, so they’re more likely to go on to the intensive care units and to go on to die”, “the disease will cause problems in their lungs, hearts and kidneys for complex reasons because fat cells secrete chemicals that essentially increase the inflammatory state of the body”. People with moderate to severe obesity seems to be at a higher risk. The increased prevalence of obesity in older adults in Italy compared with China may account for the differences in mortality between these countries.
